Montessori Sea Shell Actions You Will Love!

My children love tasks that involve natural materials. Where there is some thing for them to hold, feel, touch. Where there is something that is interesting, with fascinating minor details. Today I am featuring some Montessori Shell Activities whom I know you will adore. Above and below is a shell sorting task that I presented to Otis this week. The kid sorts the shells (into the big jars) into Univalve or Bivalve.

Playdough – Four Ways

Otis is five and adores playdough now more than ever. I’ve written occasionally about how we use playdough, always with distinct things and in different colours, textures and smells. Adding essential oils to playdough is crucial. Here are four methods we’re now reveling playdough.
1. Alphabet Stamps. This is a wonderful early literacy task, remembering it’s best to begin with lower case letters.
2. Other Stamps. We have a lot of stamps at home so there’s always lots for the boys to select from. I have also wiped down our Melissa and Doug stamps and these work extremely well with the playdough too!
3. I really like combining natural materials with playdough. Feathers, shells and pinecones can also result in creative play with playdough. We don’t have these gum nuts in our neighbourhood so I ordered them through The Natural ReSourcer, they make the cutest small caps or hats.
4. Galaxy Dough!! I have wanted to do this for the longest time. I first read about Galaxy Dough at Fairy Dust Teaching. It is only black playdough with a lot of glitter combined through. It ends up all dark and sparkly – just such as the galaxy. Otis was amazed! It is enjoyable to play with as it is so different to all of our other playdough. Limelight (a craft shop in Australia) and cake decorating speciality shops have black food colouring including in a powder form. They often have a lot of different colors of food colouring which would make a nice change from the normal colours you see in playdough. We could make a set of playdough all in precisely the same colour but in different colours – lovely! We use playdough and Alphabet Stamps from Happy Hands Happy Heart. Alphabet Puzzle Tote

If so, this is a really enjoyable activity that strengthens knowledge on the contours and form of letters. Bathroom learning – three stages

There’s a great feeling you get when your child does the right thing at the perfect time. It makes you feel proud, makes you feel like a fantastic parent. At this stage he was still wearing a nappy through the night.
3. DAY: PANTIES (AT HOME) TRAINING PANTS (WHEN OUT) NIGHTTIME: NAPPY Slowly we transitioned Otis to when we left the house wearing training pants and just wearing panties at home. The training pants gave us confidence that if Otis had an injury most of it’d be got – no pools on the shop floor, but Otis and his clothes would be wet. Otis was wearing Under the Nile Baby Training Pants (12-24 months). At this period he was still wearing a nappy during the night. This was the longest interval of a few months.
4. DAY: PANTIES NIGHTTIME: NAPPY As Otis became routine and more assured at utilizing the potty he transitioned to wearing panties all of the time during the day and wore a nappy during the night.
5. DAY: UNDERWEAR NIGHTTIME: KNICKERS Otis became so confident going to the potty that at night he would take his nappy away. He transitioned to wearing panties all the time. Toilet learning – two steps forward, one step back

As I mentioned we weren’t just travelling, we were travelling last minute, I was travelling with the boys without my husband (so feeling extra exposed) and we were also grieving for member of the family who is no longer with us. Gosh, I’m having trouble holding back the tears . Just how did we go?
We left home at about 4.30am. I consider this to be nighttime so I kept Otis in a nappy. But into the vehicle we went directly from the plane and that I made the decision to keep a nappy on. Although he might make use of the potty at home he wouldn’t signify in time for us to stop the automobile. It was well to the afternoon until he was out of a nappy. During our stay Otis in was in a mixture of knickers training pants and nappies. He scarcely made it. We did not make much advancement. But I am not putting pressure on myself or Otis. Travelling using a toilet learning toddler – give strength to me. We know the sensitive period for toilet learning is 12-18 months. Eek, Otis is now 17 months and although we’ve been doing nicely (by our standards) things are still a bit hit and miss.
Otis wears training pants or underpants in the home. Training trousers are typically worn by Otis when we’re out of the house. For his nighttime slumber he wears a nappy. He occasionally makes it. He understands when he needs to go. Occasionally he will look at me and next thing and sometimes the potty will be looked at by him we understand there exists a pool on the ground. But progress is being made by him and we have been happy with where we’re at. We received some awful news last night. First thing tomorrow we shall be flying out to be with family. Together with all the craziness of unexpectedly packing and making arrangements I almost gave myself permission to return back full time. We now have a flight longs drives ahead of us. Many hours will likely be spent in the homes of family. I will be scared while we’re away, that Otis WOn’t make use of the potty. The preparation, cleaning and washing will be a waste of time. But if we go back? I am aware a toilet learning toddle is nothing. However, as we are toilet learning earlier than others it feels like we’ve a point to show (and that we shall fail miserably). Toilet trained by two?

I adore having a toilet trained toddle. Life is really so much easier. All pain and the perseverance was worth it.
At 22 months I feel like I can finally say that Otis is trained – daytime only. We haven’t approached night toileting but I must get to that soon. It has been distressing. For about three months his toilet learning only plateaued. For three months I mean one or two injuries everyday – by plateaued. I cannot recall his last accident. He sometimes makes a wreck but that is related to tricky garments or dare I say being a lad. He still wants help with his clothing. He also will not go anywhere other when compared to a toilet or a potty. His preferable place is a real toilet. He uses a step stool plus a toddler seat when needed. Otis does not have injuries during his daytime naps once he awakens, but he’ll usually go. Same with auto trips, once we return home he will usually go right to the toilet.
Amongst his peers he is neither late nor early. I personally do not feel there is an age whereby a kid should be trained but I believe that once a child understands (when they need to go) and have control (over their bodily functions) they should be given the chance (to use the potty/toilet). Once a child may use the potty I believe it’s disrespectful to put them in a nappy (thus my wake up call to start nighttime toileting). Also it is summer here and summer is so much more easy than winter. I’ve consistently had two years as an expectation for my own children. Caspar was entirely trained by two. Somehow he nighttime toileted easily. I am hoping the same with Otis. Yay to Otis and wish me luck with the nights.
